An ongoing survey of emotion
New Year's Day
And year upon year
on the face of the monkey
a monkey disguise

Past 8pm in February
I'm admiring
your wet hair slowly stick to cheeks
in snowglow yellow streetlight-lit street
on garbage bags in the park
we're sledding and it's still coming down
a laughmarch back to the water
before warming up
Muse
from the pit of adoration
creeps consuming ivy
of doubt and longing
returning in due time
after every burning
Workshop after Erica's group performance (circa 2009)
What you use it is what it is
What you misuse it isn't always what it isn't or is
What's the use?
I can't explain it
but the rarest pleasure of my life
was an intimate whispered translation
of nonsense in the cinema
Nighthawks by Edward Hopper
phantasms perched in a moment that has stretched
as a shadow across seventeen years
An editor excising shame in the retelling
but the light remains a sickly gold
Ode to Karl Ove Knausgård
a mass of mussels
blueblack on pilings
as passive as pensive
in torpor to tide
an outline of innards
revealed in fleshy yawn
Marriage 1
the uniform ease in slicing a watermelon
and the sweet stickiness that ensues
Brautigan
Knotty lecherous pine
felled in 1934 outside Troutdale Oregon
and bucked and milled later that year
was eventually churned into coffins
by the methods outlined in
Coffin-Making and Undertaking
by Paul N. Hasluck published in 1913
which made for the most obvious receptacle
and decently affordable choice
for Trout Fishing in America remains
Disco ball
splash speckle
upon a face
five thousand beams make
a mess of the place
Wanda directed by Barbara Loden
listless in drift
Rimbaud's sober boat
gliding through the rust belt
Esau (incomplete)
a farmhouse of desiccated flies
with rainbleached red notice posted
and a slouching timberplank barn
sheltering dust-smothered bottles
all fold into flood
of blood and blazing plastic
The northern city
months of reeling
slowly unspooling
in subdued ceremony
at midnight arrivals
Preoccupation
for days
I study the strata
in the chasm cleaved
by a thought of you
Close enough
I came in from the weather
glasses mottled with rain
a cathartic delusion of having wept
Late June
in noonday forest
everything is moving
at least a little
Portents
there's no such thing as a bad omen
unless you'd rather be surprised
at what might happen
Rothko's summer on the Baltic
these long days
of stretched dawn
and sunset shift—
spectral wash
to distillate bricks
stacked in haze
September
A thirty mile morning to Floyd, VA by trailways astride a seafoam Schwinn. A friendly woman named Christina who delivers the CSA suggested I make the trip. Lodging courtesy of a surfer turned farmer who winters in Hawaii. It seems he forgot I was coming but is delighted to see me nonetheless. He insists I take a load off--I insist I assist. Rinsing lugs outside the equipment shed as prep before plucking okra and pulling potatoes in the afternoon with the WWOOFers.
Come sunset and dinner is assembled from the day's odds and ends. Five of us in his house. Walls adorned with creased surfing posters. A monthly calendar showcasing waves and riders--heavily annotated with scrawls I wouldn't understand anyway. September provides a photo of a shadowy figure crouched in cresting wave. He tells me he wants to leave and not come back. He started the farm on a lark with the mother of his daughter who has since left him. He visits them in Hawaii every winter. 'Just two, three more years here tops.'
After dinner Christina and I fumble through the dark to a firepit tucked just beyond the treeline and get some roughcut logs going. Wind picking up. Last year she had moved back to the states from Slovenia as her father had succumbed to cancer brought on by exposure to defoliant during the Vietnam War. Not hiding the grief. She had been living in Slovenia for six years and involved in a long term relationship. We take turns extolling and cursing international romance. The wind turns to gale and she offers me the second room of her two-room tent. 'It wouldn't hurt to anchor the other side of the tent anyway.' I oblige. Thanks.
I'm the last to awaken and everyone's already deep in their daily duties. I clip my panniers on their rack. Thanks so much for letting me come out. What a beautiful place. 'No problem, brother. Anytime.'
Ants
the almighty and elementary
an outpouring primordial throng
venting the roils of subterranean percolation
piles and heaps pulled to firmament
at the tidal musings of the upper sea
fan forth the pilgrim stream
monistic will in manifest rill

arriving as a tickle on my arm

Adrift, Blow trumpets on quarterdeck
And clipped in the lyre the illuminated score
Torn betwixt the blossoming Emperies of Vala
And receding Jerusalem's golden halls
Blow trumpets, pray hear clarions reply
